Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk (Dairy Free)

I love cooking and baking. But it annoys me when almost every recipe I find calls for dairy; mainly cows breast milk. 

One of my favorite desserts (flan) is typically made with sweetened condensed milk. I've made flan without it, but it seemed like something was missing. 

So I decided to make some dairy free sweetened condensed milk. 


  • 2/3 cup of sugar

  • 1 16oz can of unsweetened, full fat coconut milk (one of the brands I like is Thai Kitchen)


Put coconut milk and sugar into a pot. Turn the heat on medium and allow sugar to dissolve. You can lightly stir it until sugar is completely dissolved.  

Once dissolved, put the heat on low, the lowest it can be. Let it simmer for about an hour. You don't want it to get thick. If it gets thick, it will eventually harden like candy after placing it in the fridge. So you want it to be a little lose but not like water. 

Pour your dairy free sweetened condensed milk into a container (mason jars are great) and allow it to cool before putting the top on. After it cools, seal it and place it in the refrigerator after it cools.
