Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk (Dairy Free)

I love cooking and baking, but it annoys me when almost every recipe I find calls for dairy. One of my favorite desserts (flan) is typically made with sweetened condensed milk. I've made flan without it, but it definitely did not turn out the same. So I won't be doing that again.

I decided to make some dairy free sweetened condensed milk with two simple ingredients.

What you'll need:

  • 2/3 cup of sugar

  • 1 16oz can of unsweetened, full fat coconut milk (one of the brands I love is Thai Kitchen)


Put the coconut milk and sugar into a pot. Set to a medium heat, you don't want it to boil, and allow sugar to dissolve.

Once dissolved, put the heat on low and let it simmer for about an hour or until it turns a caramel brown. Don't let it get thick. If it that happens, it will eventually harden like candy after placing it in the fridge.

Pour your dairy free sweetened condensed milk into a container and allow it to cool before putting the top on. After it cools, seal it and place it in the refrigerator.
